Anomaly is a new game in a fine tradition of 1-vs-many games of hidden information and movement—games that capture the menacing and suspenseful experience of hunting or being hunted. Among the greats in this class are Fury of Dracula, Scotland Yard, Letters from Whitechapel, and Fluch der Mumie (republished recently as Pyramid of Pengqueen).
Anomaly has been designed to reside at the “pointy end” of this class of games, distilling the experience down to a claustrophobic and cut-throat duel to the death, where hearts get pounding quickly and don't let up until the climactic moment. The game play has shadowy depths to explore but plays more quickly than most games in the genre, keeping the action moving and potentially encouraging multiple plays in one sitting as different players take on the role of the Anomaly. Replay-ability of the game is enhanced as the design of Anomaly takes the concept of an unknown adversary to the extreme—the Anomaly will inevitably evolve into a different adversary with each game!
We love this genre of 1-vs-many hidden information games and enjoyed crafting our own unique addition to it. Thomas Dagenais-Lespérance is a young game designer born and raised in Montreal, Canada. After his studies in classical music composition, he developed an interest in game design and slowly devoted more and more time to it. From 2016 to 2018 he had the opportunity to work for FoxMind, a local publisher and distributor, which allowed him to learn a lot about the industry and the commercial aspects of making games. He now invests as much time as possible designing and testing games and is an active member of Montreal's designer community. He loves games that offer a focused experience and high player interaction. His first published game, Decrypto, came out in early 2018 with The Masked Scorpion, and recently won the Lys Grand Public. Anomaly, now on Kickstarter with Starling Games, is his second published game.
